Servicing, repairs and upgrades

From a check over to ensure your laptop continues to operate at its peak effiency to full mainboard replacements, NRU can solve most hardware problems. All repairs are done by a qualified electronics engineer with over two decades experience and are guaranteed.

Servicing.

Our service takes a two pronged approach. First is hardware. The laptop is fully cleaned and inspected to make sure all the hardware is working correctly. The cooling fan and heatsinks are cleaned of any dust and fluff build up which is commonplace in laptops 12 months and older used in the home and even earlier if someone in the house smokes. Below is typically what we find when cleaning out laptops used in homes. As you can see, the heatsink in the base is nearly blocked all the way across and the fan is starting to be blocked up too.

Not cleaning out the heatsinks can result in them getting blocked, causing your laptop to overheat and shut down. If your laptop cooling fan is on high speed all the time, the laptop is freezing or shutting down not long after starting from cold, please contact us. DO NOT USE LAPTOP COOLING PADS. They do not fix the problem, merely delay the inevitable. The longer you ignore this, the more likely permanent and more costly damage is to occur.

The second approach we take to servicing is software. We have found that many users never even run Windows update, let alone do basic housekeeping tasks. All Windows and hardware driver updates are applied. The Windows installation is checked for malware and virus infection, old unnecessary temporary files are deleted to recover space and the hard drive optimised for faster file reading. Free software is installed to help you with basic housekeeping.

Repairs.

For most repairs such as screen replacements and charge socket repair it is possible to offer a fixed quote that includes both parts and labour. There are some repairs it is not possible to quote for however an estimation would be given and the customer is kept informed of any changes in cost as the repair progresses and can choose to continue or have their laptop returned, only being charged for the work that has been done.

Upgrades.

If your computer is running slowly, a memory upgrade usually solves the problem especially if the hard drive light is lit all the time. As programs become more complex, they need more memory to run. Once upon a time 512MB was enough. Now 1GB is considered the minimum with 2GB meeting most peoples needs. We can upgrade all laptops under 10 years old and we only use the best memory from Crucial in our memory upgrades. Crucial memory is guaranteed for compatibility and comes with a true lifetime warranty.

We can also upgrade hard drives and offer a data transfer service for a nominal fee so you don't need to reinstall software and all your data again.

Due to the volatile nature of pricing of memory and hard drives which changes daily, please contact us for more information or a quote.

In addition to hard drive and memory upgrades, we can offer optical drive upgrades such as DVDROM/CDRW to a DVDRW, CPU upgrades if possible and also with some laptops it is possible to fit higher resolution screens such as in the Dell and IBM laptops we sell.

We also fit customer supplied parts. Most parts are fitted at a fixed cost but as with repairs, there may be the odd exception where we cannot give a fixed price. Please note that we do not take any responsibility for incorrect or defective parts supplied by the customer that do not fit and in that event, the labour charge is still applicable.
